Pass by the scenic location used to film the famous “Bridge over the River Kwai” movie in 1956, and if you’re lucky, on a clear day, you may even dive to see the remains of the actual bridge and the carriages used for the film (only for experienced divers with proper equipment). Early this morning at approximately 5:30-6:00, you will depart from your hotel for the drive to Horton Plains National Park. It’s best to leave as early as possible as mists build up as the day continues, obscuring the view from World’s End. We suggest you ask your hotel the night before if they can prepare a packed breakfast for your journey. Horton Plains National Park sits on Sri Lanka’s highest plateau at over 2100m above sea level in the central mountains and offers an astounding variety of scenery – from misty mountains to grasslands, from marshes to ice-cold streams, lakes, and waterfalls. The park is home to colorful butterflies, many species of birds, and other wildlife, including samba deer, bears, monkeys, barking deer, giant squirrels, fishing cats, and wild boar.
On your 2-3 hours hike (approximately 9km), you will stop at the beautiful “Bridal Veil” Baker’s Falls and then at the World’s End escarpment, where the plateau plunges almost 1000m in a sheer drop. If the weather is clear, this spot affords spectacular views. This is a relatively easy hike but over uneven terrain with some steep sections. You should wear sensible footwear and drink water. Drive back to your hotel around lunchtime and spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel in Nuwara Eliya.
After breakfast at the hotel, proceed to Nanuoya Railway Station for a local train journey to Ella. This scenic 3-hour journey is a picturesque ride through the mountains. Your chauffeur will drop you at Nanu Oya railway station and pick you up at Ella railway station. Afterward, proceed to Ella, check in at the hotel, and enjoy an overnight stay at the hotel.
After having breakfast at the hotel, go for a city tour in Ella. Ella is a small town in the Badulla District of the Uva Province, Sri Lanka, governed by an Urban Council. It is situated at an elevation of 1,041 meters above sea level and approximately 200 kilometers east of Colombo. The area is rich in biodiversity with numerous varieties of flora and fauna. Ella is surrounded by hills covered with cloud forests and tea plantations, providing a cooler climate than its surroundings due to its elevation. The Ella Gap offers stunning views across the southern plains of Sri Lanka.
During the city tour, visit the Demodara nine arch bridge and Little Adam’s Peak. The Demodara nine arch viaduct, built during the British colonial period, was constructed between two railway stations – Ella and Demodara. It remains the largest of its kind in Sri Lanka. Located approximately 3100 feet above sea level, this 100-foot high bridge is built entirely of solid blocks of rock, bricks, and cement, without the use of a single length of steel. The bridge was commissioned in 1921 and has evolved into one of the most popular places to visit in Ella. After completing the city tour, return to the hotel in Ella for an overnight stay at the hotel.
Have breakfast at the hotel and then proceed to Yala. Yala National Park is Sri Lanka’s most visited wildlife reserve, covering an area of 1260 square kilometers. The park’s dry-zone landscape is strikingly beautiful and the park’s wildlife has its distinctive charm, with huddles of colorful painted storks perched on the incongruously conjoined sight of elephants marching sedately through the bush while rabbits scamper through the undergrowth. Leopards, sloth bears, and elephants are the “big 3” here, although crocodiles, jackals, and the many varieties of birds are also a huge draw to this park, which is the second-largest national park in the country. Check in at Hotel and enjoy an overnight stay in Yala.
Morning jeep safari begins at 5:30 am and ends at 9:30 am. After breakfast at the hotel, leave for the Yala National Park for the safari. Return to the hotel and have a short break.
